Malvern St James Girls’ School

Project Overview

Project: Planned Preventative Maintenance Survey
Client: Malvern St James Girls’ School
Contract value:  Undisclosed

Services provided: Planned Maintenance

Malvern St James Girls School is situated in the centre of Malvern.  It occupies a diverse range of buildings which include a former spa hotel, dating from 1862, Victorian villas, as well as mid-20th century purpose-built school accommodation.  It also boasts the only surviving example in the UK of a Binishell, the Grade II listed Edinburgh Dome – which houses the school sports hall.

Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed to undertake a planned preventative maintenance survey (PPMS) of the entire estate, to facilitate a practical and realistic repair, refurbishment,  and maintenance programme for the school moving forward.

In addition to working in a live school environment, the main challenge on this project was its scale and time constraints – the school wanted the reports in specified timescale to enable them to allocate resources and undertake any urgent work quickly.  To resolve these challenges, we worked closely with the client to undertake work around lesson times and in the main holiday periods, and as with any live school environment we ensured all our staff undertook enhanced DBS checks.  To maximise man hours available for the surveys we brought in staff from our other offices to expand the team, and used drones to facilitate roof surveys.  As a result we were able to issue the reports to the school within the required timeframe.

Following the successful completion of the PPMS, Daniel Connal Partnership was delighted to be appointed on a series of subsequent projects which addressed a number of issues identified within our report.  These include the external refurbishment of the junior boarding house, the conversion of underused music practice rooms to provide graduate accommodation, and the replacement of boilers in the main school building.
