Celebrating 80 years of DCP
80 years of Daniel Connal Partnership
2026 marks 80 years of Daniel Connal Partnership. That’s eight decades of experience, expertise, teamwork, and commitment to each and every one of our clients. It’s a proud milestone and naturally raises the question: what exactly has gone into those 80 years?
Thousands of projects. Hundreds of employees. Countless careers launched, nurtured, and grown.
The world of 2026 looks nothing like 1946, yet Daniel Connal Partnership has adapted, evolved, and thrived and we’re planning for the future. Here’s how.
1. The Beginning: 1946
A canny Scotsman, a London office, and a very personal approach to winning work set the foundations for everything that followed .....
Daniel Buchanan Connal opened our first office at 13 Christopher Street, EC2. A proud Scot and a qualified Quantity Surveyor, he was known for visiting architect friends in the morning and returning after a good lunch with a fresh roll of drawings and a new commission. Procurement may have changed since then, but the principle he established remains: business is about people as much as it is about service.
2. A Family Affair
From Southend to Leeds, our early expansion followed the path of a country rebuilding itself ..…
In 1951, Dan’s brother Stanley opened our Southend office. This was followed by offices in Kettering, Leeds, Canterbury as Dan astutely expanded to follow the post WW2 building boom across the country. Colchester and Norwich followed in 1971, and 1994 respectively.
3. Buildings that tell the story of their times
Our projects have mirrored the priorities of each generation — from 1970s civic landmarks to today’s sustainability‑led designs ..…
Our projects have moved with the times. In the 1970s, for example, our Southend team under the leadership of then Partner, Neil Clarke, helped shape the town’s modern identity with landmark civic buildings in concrete and glass – a £2.5m programme then, equivalent to around £42m today. Sustainability is now a key factor, either designed-in like Dyson Building at Gresham’s School or retrofitted as buildings are repurposed, like the YMCA Hub in Norwich – both award-winning projects. Across 80 years, we’ve delivered thousands of housing, commercial, community, health, ecclesiastical, and educational projects. Styles and requirements change; our commitment to value and expertise does not.
4. Technology: From Typewriters to Teams
Handwritten calculations and typewriters have given way to digital workflows, virtual meetings, and a sustainability driven future ..…
In 1946, everything was handwritten, typed up and laboriously duplicated. Measurements were in feet and inches, and calculations in £s Ss & ds. The shift to metric in the 70s was a blessing. Fast forward to today: the digital revolution has been …. revolutionary! Software streamlines, measurement, pricing, billing and specification. Teams meetings have replaced many in‑person sessions. Paper is no longer king, and while it will never disappear completely – we’re working on it! All part of our sustainability drive – along with cycle to work and electric car schemes – supporting our Carbon Neutral status, achieved in 2025.
5. From QS Roots to Multi-disciplinary Strength
What began with quantity surveying has grown into a full suite of specialist services shaped by legislation, technology, and client needs ..…
Adapting to changing markets and keeping abreast of new developments has always been a strength. We began as quantity surveyors, but over the decades driven by the foresight of successive Partners and Associates, we’ve expanded our expertise adding building surveying, project management, health & safety, dispute resolution, and more. Of all these, the most transformative to the practice was the move into building surveying. Instigated by then Partner, John Bainbridge, who had identified a growing demand for the service, DCP employed their first Chartered Building Surveyor – Simon Jacklin – in 1994. Simon then went on to lead the practice and now acts as a consultant. Today we’re proud to be a near 50/50 blend of Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying.
A fun DCP fact: Robert Dale, our current Senior Partner, embodies this blend, being part of a very rare professional breed, as he is both a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and a Chartered Building Surveyor.
Today, we continue to evolve with new services such as Embodied Carbon Assessments and Building Safety Act Principal Designer roles ensuring we’re responding to, or ahead of new legislation, technology, and client priorities.
6. Winning Ways
From early award winning schemes to more recent successes, our work - and our people - continue to shine ..…
Our focus is always delivering for our clients, so wider recognition for our projects and our people is a wonderful bonus. From award‑winning projects in the early days, like the Monastery for Poor Clare Nuns to Wells Maltings and the Clare Priory Building, our work has been celebrated locally and nationally.
A standout moment came in 2019 when we were named FSB Employer of the Year (East), reflecting our long‑standing commitment to staff wellbeing and development.
7. Our People: The Heart of DCP
Eight decades of progress have been driven by dedicated colleagues whose loyalty, talent, and passion define who we are ..…
Our teams, past and present, are the reason we’ve thrived through eight decades of change challenge and opportunity. Recognising this by encouraging, supporting, nurturing and rewarding them has been central to who we are. Many colleagues have stayed with us for decades, and we still maintain a direct link back to Dan Connal himself through our current Senior Partner, Robert Dale.
8. A Legacy of Leadership: Bob Juniper
From trainee to Senior Partner, his remarkable career and values helped shape the modern practice we are today ..…
The record for longevity at DCP to date belongs to our former Senior Partner, the late Bob Juniper, who spent his entire career with the practice, starting as a trainee straight from school in 1964, rising through the ranks to become Senior Partner. His years of leadership helped guide DCP to the multi‑disciplinary consultancy we are today. His influence and the values he promoted, both professional and personal remain the bedrock of who we are today.
9. The Juniper Foundation: Investing in the Future
Created to honour an extraordinary legacy, the Juniper Foundation strengthens our commitment to developing the next generation ..…
To honour Bob’s legacy, we’ve launched the Juniper Foundation. Building on our current achievements the Foundation will enshrine the structure and funding to deliver the continuous professional development of all our team. Alongside our ongoing outreach to schools, and provision of work experience and apprenticeships, the Juniper Foundation will strengthen our ability to grow, evolve, develop and to ensure our future is as strong as our past.
