Aberdour School, founded in 1928, is a co-educational prep school in Tadworth, Surrey. Aberdour wanted to replace a collection of dilapidated demountable classrooms that were being used to house their pre-prep school with a sustainable purpose-built new facility that would engage children and enhance the learning environment.
A key driver of the project was speed as the school wished to minimise disruption to pupils across the school site. To facilitate this they engaged with modular construction specialist Pod Developments Ltd who were able to design and install a new pre-prep building on the footprint of the existing classrooms. The modular components were all manufactured off-site and assembled over a 4 month period which started in May 2023. To avoid disturbance, the pre-prep school was relocated to a temporary structure on the school’s playing field for the summer term.

Specifically designed as environmentally friendly buildings with low energy consumption, the innovative modular design, links the individual spaces together, clearly demarcating the Pre-prep School area on the school site. The bespoke design for the pre-prep building mixes sustainable materials, including FSC-sourced timber, cork, and SIP panels (Self Insulated Panels) with renewable energy and cutting-edge technology. The windows and doors are double glazed and A rated and the building incorporates a state of the art infrared panel and air source heating system. This approach has resulted in a highly sustainable building that achieved an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The 1080m² scheme delivers 10 new classrooms, a hall, offices, a Design Technology room, Senco room and toilets, as well as an landscaped exterior area.
DCP was appointed to conduct contract negotiations between the school and Pod Developments, agreeing a JCT Design and Build Contract and contract sum. We were also engaged to monitor the progress of work against agreed financial draw-downs during the course of the design and build.
We were delighted that the new sustainable pre-prep school building was realised on time and on budget.
