80th Anniversary Celebration Breakfast

A great breakfast is always a strong start to the day, and even better when shared with friends and colleagues.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in the lovely surroundings of The Wivenhoe House in Colchester for our Anniversary Celebration breakfast – marking 80 years of DCP.
As always, the conversation flowed, along with the fizz. A great talking point this year was a carefully curated table of curiosities, displaying a timeline for the Daniel Connal Partnership from its beginnings in Christopher Street, London to the present day. From surveying textbooks that our founder Dan Connal might well have used, along with the rotary dial bakerlite telephone, through the fiendishly complex 1940s’ comptometer to the drone we use today, it served to highlight the huge technological changes that have taken place in the construction sector over the last 80 years.
This year’s 80th Anniversary Breakfast replaced our usual St George’s Day celebration, where guests are traditionally invited in rhyme and asked to respond in the same way – the best effort being awarded the Amazing Poet trophy.
With the rise of AI we recognised the need for a fresh approach, so we invited our guests to collaborate at the table to write a poem about our 80th Anniversary – with one key rule: no phones allowed! We’ll admit we had been a little unsure how this would go, but our guests rose magnificently to the challenge.
We were treated to some brilliant off-the-cuff verses – long, short, witty and heartfelt – with the winning poem being decided by ‘clap-o-meter’. Step forward Sam Bawden from Holmes and Hills solicitors, who penned the winning rhyme for his table, and stood up to deliver it with aplomb.
With the business of the day complete, those who weren’t rushing back to the office enjoyed a post breakfast coffee on the terrace in the warm May sunshine.
