Weald of Kent Grammar School, Tonbridge, Kent was keen to expand both its sports curriculum and facilities by building a new sports hall within the school’s existing playing fields.
Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed on behalf of our partners Ball Hall (Project Management) as Employer’s Agent on this project which was procured on a Design and Build basis. The architect on the 48 week scheme was Clague LLP and the main contractor Chris Browne Builders.
The facility includes:
- four badminton sports hall
- fully fitted integrated gymnastics area with landing pit and supplementary artistic gymnastic sprung flooring
- retractable bleacher seating
- dance studio
- café/teaching area
- changing facilities
One of the main challenges on this project was the tight timescale. Planning permission was received in October 2015 and work started on site the following month to ensure that completion was possible with the required timescale. The school buildings and surrounding playing fields remained in use throughout the construction period.
The new sports facility was completed on time and on budget. The official opening ceremony had a distinctly golden glow with double Olympic gold medal winner Max Whitlock performing the honours and then taking to the equipment for a demonstration of his skills.
