Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed on behalf of Ball Hall Ltd as Employer’s Agent on this project at St John’s Beaumont School in Windsor. The scheme included the replacement of the old gymnasium with a state of the art sports hall which incorporates 4 badminton courts, a climbing wall, dance studio and rowing room together with associated amenities, a classroom and social space. The new facility is located adjacent to the main school building designed by John Francis Bentley.
The scheme was procured as a Design and Build through a competitive single stage route.
In a sensitive location, the design incorporated a curved roof to soften the appearance of the building and a light brick banding to blend with the existing buildings on the site.
As well as ensuring that the substantial works caused as little disruption to the daily life of the school as possible, there were two particular challenges on this site; levels and access.
The chosen site was steeply sloping and substantial earthworks and piling were necessary to correct the fluctuating levels and enable construction.
Access could have been reached along the school’s narrow main drive, but it was obvious that there would have been serious health and safety risks, potential for damage and disruption to the school.
DCP helped facilitate meetings between the school and an adjacent landowner to negotiate and agree an alternative access route.
The 40 week scheme was brought in on time and on budget and the sports hall was opened by Her Majesty the Queen.
