SCHOOL BOARDING HOUSE IMPROVEMENT & EXTENSION
Project: Single storey common room extension and double storey staff accommodation extension
Client: Gresham’s School
Services provided: Quantity Surveying, Contract Administration, Principal Designer (CDM2015)
Contract value: £400k
Gresham’s, an independent co-educational boarding school in Holt, North Norfolk, had identified a need to invest in and improve facilities to maintain its standing in the competitive private education marketplace. This project was part of an overall £9m development plan.
Edinburgh boarding house was built in the 1980s. The existing common room, while pleasant, was considered undersized for its purpose and lacked sufficient space for flexible use. Accommodation for residential staff, Matron and House Tutor, was also cramped and required comprehensive improvement to ensure that the school could continue to attract the appropriate calibre of staff.
Daniel Connal Partnership, provided Quantity Surveying, Contract Administration, Principal Designer (CDM2015) on this scheme designed by LSi Architects, which provided a single storey common room extension and double storey staff accommodation extension. The contractor on the project was Kier Construction.
The single storey ground floor extension increased the size of the common room making it much more spacious and giving access to outside space which increase flexibility of use.
The double storey extension provided two attractive and spacious 2 bedroom apartments for residential staff.
The particular challenge on this project was undertaking a major construction project on a constrained site, with young people in residence which raised health & safety and safeguarding issues. Our careful programming, taking advantage of school holidays, close liaison with the school’s staff and assiduous financial management, ensured the safe and successful completion of the project.
