REPLACEMENT CEILINGS & LIGHTING UPGRADE, COLCHESTER GENERAL HOSPITAL
Project: Replacement of Street Ceilings and Upgrade of Existing Lighting
Client: Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust
Services provided: Quantity Surveying, Contract Administration & CDM Services
Contract value: £375k
This was a 3 Phase project to replace street ceilings and upgrade the existing lighting at Colchester General Hospital.
Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed to report on options available to improve the lighting levels and aesthetics of the existing street corridor ceilings and lighting to the ground first and second floors of the main building at the busy hospital.
Following an extensive review of the options available, we worked in tandem with Johns Slater & Haward, Mechanical & Electrical Consultants, to develop the design criteria for a fully addressable and reportable LED lighting solution, incorporating emergency lighting which enabled the on site facilities team to detect and rectify any faults rapidly without the need for visual inspection. The unsightly ceiling slats were replaced with vinyl coated plaster board ceiling tiles, inlaid in a fixed ceiling grid.
Phases 2 & 3 of the project were particularly challenging as work had to take place in the main circulation areas of the hospital during the day when footfall was extremely high.
The project was required to achieve wide ranging targets for the client. Thorough research and vetting of the available options achieved all of these objectives::
- LED lighting reduced the Trust’s carbon footprint and energy bills
- Seamless vinyl ceiling tiles provide an easy-clean, dust-trap free solution to meet hygiene and infection control requirements
- Integrated emergency lighting to reduce reliance on the hospital’s back up generator in the event of power failure
