Esher High School is a co-educational secondary school with around 1,100 pupils located in Esher, Surrey. The existing school sports hall, built in the 1950s, was small with poor ceiling height which restricted the range of sporting activities on offer to pupils.
As part of plans to improve its facilities, the school appointed Ball Hall to provide a 4 badminton courts sports hall, with ancillary facilities, a fitness suite, dance studio, conference room and reception area.
Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed on behalf of Ball Hall Ltd as Employer’s Agent and to provide CDM services on the scheme, which was procured under a Design and Build Contract via a competitive single stage route.
The initial challenge on this project was to achieve planning permission on this sensitive green belt site. Ball Hall and DCP worked hard with planning consultants and the local authority to overcome objections, which enabled the project to proceed.
Construction of the sports hall took place in a live environment, the school remaining operational throughout the build. Careful consideration was given to student and staff safety. Measures implemented by DCP and close liaison with both the client & contractor ensured that the project proceeded safely with minimal disruption to the day to day activities of the school.
This excellent facility has enabled the school to offer a much broader sports curriculum to its students.
On completion the sports hall was opened by HRH The Duke of Kent.
