MORRIS WARD SECLUSION ROOM, SUNFLOWERS COURT
Project: Extension & Refurbishment for Provision of Seclusion Room Facility
Client: North East London NHS Foundation Trust
Services provided: Project Management, Architectural Design Services, Principal Designer
Contract value: £200k
Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed by the North East London NHS Foundation Trust to provide a state-of-the-art seclusion room at Sunflowers Court, Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford.
The seclusion room in the Morris Ward, will accommodate adults housed under the Mental Health Act who cannot be safely assessed and treated in an open facility. Morris Ward will be a leading facility of its type in the UK, setting the gold standard for provision of similar accommodation elsewhere.
The facility comprises an ensuite seclusion room, de-escalation and observation area and isolated external space. The area earmarked for development measured 10m² and abutted the existing structure on 3 sides.
Our design team consulted extensively with staff to ensure that they fully understood the Trust’s requirements and aspirations for the new unit. They also consulted leading industry professionals to assist with the specification of bespoke internal finishes and then used their experience and creativity to produce a scheme which met or exceeded the client’s objectives whilst ensuring that the unit satisfied all statutory requirements.
Of particular importance was designing appropriate access to the Ward, ensuring that it flowed sensibly from the existing building to the new unit whilst not intruding on the privacy and on-going treatment of patients in the adjacent areas.
Maintaining appropriate segregation between site activities was also vital to the success of this project in such a sensitive ‘live environment’.
Our careful programming and management of the project phases ensured that patients in the co-located facilities were able to continue treatment without unnecessary or prolonged disruption or intrusion. Key to this was our implementation of a detailed Construction Phase Plan and on-going communication and co-ordination with the Principal Contractor and Client.
Creative design solutions enabled us to deliver a fully compliant Seclusion Room layout which gained the necessary planning approval from the local authority. Our extensive CDM experience ensured an appropriate Health and Safety strategy was implemented safeguarding patients, staff and workforce alike.
