GARRISON ATHLETICS PAVILION, COLCHESTER
Project: New Athletics Pavilion, Colchester Garrison
Services provided: Quantity Surveying, CDM Services
Contract value: £720k
The Daniel Connal Partnership was appointed as Quantity Surveyor and to provide CDM services on this project to build a new Athletics Pavilion at the Colchester Garrison.
The new Pavilion, designed to complement the adjacent original pavilion building, constructed in 1925, includes a large Bar, Lounge, Servery and Kitchen, WCs and a Reception area.
An initial challenge for the project was provided by its location; the Athletics Pavilion and associated sporting facilities are situated at Abbey Fields, a site of considerable archaeological interest as a known Roman cemetery.
The Colchester Archaeological Trust undertook monitoring visits throughout the project and continuous archaeological supervision took place during the ground-works phase, to ensure any finds were reported and catalogued appropriately quickly and efficiently avoiding undue delay.
A further challenge for us was the close proximity of the construction site to the athletics track, existing pavilion and artificial hockey pitch which remained in use during the build and the requirement for site access via a busy pavement and across the internal sports field.
Safety of facility users and passers-by was of paramount concern. Close liaison with the Client and Athletics Club was key to agreeing necessary site restrictions and use of a banksman facilitated safe entry of goods onto and across the site. Additional measures were also taken to enclose the construction site as far as possible to prevent dust damage to the artificial hockey pitch surface.
Plans put in place by Daniel Connal Partnership ensured that safe access and egress for the Contractors and users of the athletics facility was maintained throughout the project, to the benefit of all concerned.
