Project: Extensions to common rooms in Kenwyn & Crossways Boarding Houses
Client: Gresham’s School
Services provided: Quantity Surveying, Contract Administration, Principal Designer (CDM2015)
Contract value: £450k
Gresham’s, an independent co-educational boarding school in Holt, North Norfolk, had identified a need to invest in and improve facilities to maintain its standing in the competitive private education marketplace. This project was part of an overall £9m development plan programmed at the school.
Kenwyn Boarding House dates from the 1950s and Crossways was built following the post war expansion of the school. The co-located boarding houses offered pleasant but somewhat cramped and dated common room accommodation. The school wished extend and update these rooms to provide more suitable and comfortable internal layouts and access to the external spaces for their boarding pupils.
Daniel Connal Partnership, provided Quantity Surveying, Contract Administration, Principal Designer (CDM2015) on this scheme designed by LSi Architects, which provided single storey common room extensions to both boarding houses. The contractor on the project was Gill Building.
Kenwyn House: Single storey extension 83m² to common room. This large common room is also used for match teas following fixtures on the adjacent sports grounds and for small on-site functions.
Crossways House: Single storey extension 46m² to common room.
The particular challenge on this project was undertaking a major construction project on a constrained site, with young people in residence which raised health & safety and safeguarding issues. Our careful programming, taking advantage of school holidays, close liaison with the school’s staff and assiduous financial management, ensured the safe and successful completion of the project.
