Harwich Haven Authority wished to understand the energy efficiency of three large office buildings in Harwich. T16 Design Ltd was appointed to undertake an energy performance survey to provide the necessary data. An energy performance surveys is essentially a desktop exercise reliant on all the materials and building techniques, etc. within a structure, performing to the optimum standard.
A thermographic survey shows how a building is actually performing, revealing issues that are not obvious to the naked eye. The two disciplines are complementary and, in this instance, the client required a thermographic survey to confirm, supplement and enhance the results of the energy performance survey.
Suitable environmental conditions are required to use a thermal camera, which creates images by capturing heat transfer. To ensure the optimum results from the thermal imagery, we resolved the issue by pre-heating the building to a constant 22° for 48 hours prior to the inspection.
Our survey was able to confirm many of the results of the energy performance survey and also highlighted a number of issues which had not been revealed by the formal desktop report.
